General Business Search Tips Example: To find article only in the Wall Street Journal.

Click on + sign next to Source. In Find a Source search box type title of desired source, for example: Wall Street Journal. Click on arrow to select. Click on Wall Street Journal. Type in Free Text search box key words for your topic.
Example: Microsoft and linus.
Click on Run Search.

OR

Click on Subject. Select subject terms. To combine subjects terms, use And, Or appropriately--radio buttons above industry on right hand side). Click on Run search.

Industry Research Search Tips Example: To find information on bankruptcies in the airline industry

Click on Industry. Click on industry of interest (ex. airlines). Type in Free text search box key words for your topic (ex. bankrupt*).
To narrow by region, click on Region. In Find a Region search box type: united states. Click on united states from result list: click on Run search.

OR

Select Industry. Click on And (radio button above industry on right hand side) to combine. Click on Subject. Select a subject term. Click Run Search.


Company Research Search Tips Example: To find information on Microsoft and linux software

Click on Company. In Find a Company search box type name of company, for example: Microsoft. Click on arrow to select. Click on Microsoft.

Type in Free Text search box key words for your topic. (ex: linux). Scroll down screen to Search for free-text terms in: search box. Click on down arrow to select: Headline. Click Run Search.

OR

Select Company Quick Search. Search by company name or symbol. Reports: Financial Snapshot plus Profile, Company, Analyst Report.

Product Research Search Tips Example: To find long articles, at least 1000 words on Coors and their advertising or marketing strategies

Type in Free Text search box search strategy.

Example: atleat5 coors and (advertis$ or market$) and wc>1000. (Coors has to appear in the full text of article at least 5 times, have the words advertise or advertising or advertisers as well as marketing or markets or marketable in the article and have a word count of at least 1000 words)

Example: To find news articles on a person

Click on Source. Click on type of publication you want to search (ex. Major News and Business Publications). Type a person's name in Free text search box, ex. William Gates, Change date box to needed dates. Click on Run Search.

Proximity W/# , adj# (# is a number)
Explanation : These words separated by # or less in this order.
Example : President w/3 Bush finds "President Bush", "President George W. Bush".

Atleast# at least # of words need to be in article. Hint: usually the more times the word is repeated in article the more the word is the focus of the article.

N/# , near# (# is a number)
Explanation : These words separated by # or less in any order.
Example : Tax/N2/Policy finds "policy of tax reform" or tax near3 policy finds "tax and fiscal policy"

Truncation TRUNCATION : *
Explanation : "*" is used as a right-handed truncator only; it will find all forms of a word.
Example : Econom* finds "economy', "economics", economical" etc.

TRUNCATION : $
Explanation : "$" is used as a right-handed truncator only; You must enter a minimum of 3 characters before using the $ sign. If no number is entered, the default is 5.
Example : Earn$4 finds "earnings".

WILDCARD : ?
Explanation : "?" is used to replace any single character. You must enter a minimum of 3 characters before using the ? sign.
Example : Wom?n finds "woman", "women"
